In a cultural landscape based increasingly on trends, engagement, and value extraction, simple acts of joy are a precious commodity.

That is precisely why we need artists and designers like Ted Cocuzza.

Ted’s work is a breath of fresh air in a sea of tired floral patterns.

It rescues us from the race to the middle that the endless consumer funnel creates, and brings us back to the idea that chasing what makes you happy can be a whole lot more important than chasing what makes you money.

MEET TED COCUZZA:

CHAPTER 1:

Since he was a kid, you’d be most likely to find Ted doing one of two things: skateboarding or drawing.

As a young artist, he never considered the idea that his art could be a career, since he was more drawn to the surreal and the fantastic than to realism or more serious subject matter.

That all changed when his high school art teacher encouraged him to go to art school, pointing at all the crazy logos on products around him and saying, “Someone’s gotta draw those. Why shouldn’t it be you?”

CHAPTER 2:

That simple question started a life-changing trajectory for Ted, and he’d soon leave everything he’d ever known to move from New York to Santa Cruz, taking a junior design job with legendary independent skate brand, NHS.

His funny and irreverent designs—coupled with his natural eye for composition and detail—moved him up the design ladder until he was working on iconic NHS brands like Creature and Mob Grip. And through it all, he’s never stopped drawing.

CHAPTER 3: Potdog

Even as a happy member of one of the rare truly independent skate brands, Ted is still constantly drawing the things that make him smile.

With an infectious, light-hearted style that’s always well composed but never takes itself too seriously, his pieces stand out starkly in a world of corporate-backed, trend-hopping cash grabs.

After all, trends come and go…but show us someone who doesn’t love robots, weed, aliens, and pizza, and we’ll show you a liar. That shit is eternal.

CHAPTER 4: Quarter Pies

After working for years to bring our favorite under appreciated artists to the world, Z_DROPPED is now lucky enough to provide an outlet for a collection of some of Ted’s personal work.

Introduced to Z through a mutual friend, this confluence of talent and independent spirit is bringing some of Ted’s wildest and most joy-inspiring designs into a well-deserved spotlight.

CONCLUSION:

When we asked Ted what he wanted to bring to people with his artwork, he told us that if it makes someone laugh or brings a smile to their face, he’s done his job. We couldn’t be more psyched to help him bring a little more joy into the world.
